Heritage Open Week has been running for over 20 years and is designed to celebrate the amazing range of collections and activities available in Bath and North East Somerset. Entry to some of the museums is free of charge on various days to residents of Bath and North East Somerset.

Some of the main events happening throughout the week are:


Saturday 25th October


Sally Lunn’s Kitchen – A Taste of History
10.00-12.00noon
Sample the famous Sally Lunn bun and experience over 300 years of tradition. 3-11 years.


Abbey Heritage Vaults – The Dream that built a Church 10.00-3.00pm
Bring the carving on the Abbey’s West Front alive as you explore the story of how one man’s dream provided the inspiration to build a church. All welcome.


Victoria Art Gallery – Storytime Trail
10.00-5.00pm
Invent your own story using your imagination as well as people and places from our pictures. Find a special person and an exciting place, what happens next is up to you. All welcome


Sunday 26th October


No 1 Royal Crescent Secret Storiesof Bath: Trail 10.30-5.00pm
Discover the hidden histories of Bath’s famous buildings! 5-11yrs


Beckford’s Tower & Museum –Museum tour with Curator
11.00-12.00 & 2.00-3.00pm
Explore the world of William Beckford as the curator takes you on a tour of the museum. Advanced booking required on 01225 460705 – max 30 places on each tour. All welcome


Monday 27th October


Fashion Museum – Dresses of History
11.00am
Tour highlighting some of the historical pieces in the museum. 12yrs+


Holburne Museum of Art – Happy Snaps
for the Album 10:30-12:30
Free drop in family photo sessions. Make your own group photograph for the Family Portrait Competition in the Sydney Studios at the Gardener’s Lodge. All welcome


Roman Baths – Talking Romans
10.00-1.00 & 2.00-4.00pm
Find out about the language the Romans used and make a sign for your bedroom door. All welcome


Tuesday 28th October


Victoria Art Gallery Landscape Peep
Show 10.30-12.00noon
Create an optical toy using your favourite countryside picture... All welcome.


The American Museum Halloween Trail
and Spooky Stories 12.00-5.00pm
Learn about Halloween traditions in the Americas by following the trail throughout the grounds. Answer questions along the way to enter a prize draw. At 2.00pm hear a spooky tale told in the tepee (weather permitting). All welcome


No 1 Royal Crescent – Storytelling Workshop 2.00-4.00pm
Join the Barefoot Storyteller to refine your storytelling techniques and experience the life of a Georgian servant 5-11yrs


Wednesday 29th October


Prior Park Landscape Gardens – Halloween Trails 11.00-4.30pm
Unearth spooky stories with our fascinating family trail. Goody bags for all who complete the trail! 3-11yrs


Museum of Bath at Work – Recording Stories 11.00-12.30pm
Learn how to interview family, friends or famous figures! All welcome


Museum of East Asian Art – Every object tells a story 11.00-12.00pm
Guided tour with stories related to our collection. All welcome


Thursday 30th October


Assembly Rooms – Colour in the Home with Farrow & Ball 6.00pm
Inspirational talk on how to transform your home, hosted by Joa Studholme, International colour consultant to Farrow & Ball. Refreshments available from the café until 6.30pm. Talk 6.30pm. Tel.

Friday 31st October


Victoria Art Gallery – Story starters
10.30-12.00noon
Make gallery stories come alive. We give you a start for your stories and you complete them in pictures. All welcome


Saturday 1st November


Victoria Art Gallery – The Big Draw:
Bright and Breezy 11.00-4.00pm
Help to draw a seaside scene. All welcome


Sunday 2nd November


Magdalen Chapel, Holloway – Exhibition
of the Chapel’s 1000 year history.
2.00-4.00pm
Talk at 3pm by the Chaplain, Revd William Burman exploring the story of the Chapel’s colourful past and present. All welcome


Bath Jewish Cemetery – Open Day
11.00-3.00pm
Bath’s only Jewish burial ground has over 50 graves, dating from 1825, many with fascinating inscriptions. There will be an archive collection, handouts and a ‘Tombstone Trail’. All welcome
